As an only child growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, Ashlie Johnson soaked up the creative environment instilled by her mother, an artist, florist, and seamstress. After years spent pouring over fashion magazines, Ashlie began experimenting with makeup and nail styling, first practicing on her friends and then, after moving to Los Angeles in 2003, developing a legion of devoted clients, including actresses Jennifer Aniston, Naomi Watts, Selma Blair, Renée Zellweger, and Jessica Biel.
Ashlie’s clean, urbane approach to nail styling is a reflection of her passion for all things aesthetically appealing; she is inspired as much by galleries, interior design classes and architectural tours as she is by avant-garde fashion designs. Her work veers from dark and moody to soft and natural, a versatility that has made her a sought-after manicurist on major fashion shoots, leading to successful collaborations with photographers including Peter Lindbergh, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Michael Thompson, Inez and Vinoodh, Ellen von Unwerth, David Sims, and Mark Seliger.
With campaign work for Prada, Anna Sui, Calvin Klein, and Gap already under her belt, Ashlie is poised to continue her ascent as an influential nail stylist in both the fashion and entertainment industries. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Vogue Nippon, and Allure, where she’s honed a vital skill: the ability to transform a familiar subject – from Gwyneth Paltrow to Reese Witherspoon to Cate Blanchett – while conveying the particular vision of the photographer.
